My first visit to Gilmer County was decades ago. The reason for my initial visit was to start hiking the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain. Since that time, I have hiked the Georgia section of the AT many times, and lack only Pennsylvania and Maryland to complete the entire 2,200 mile Trail. I through hiked the 288 miles of the Benton MacKaye Trail, which also begins in Gilmer in 2007. Shirley and I first came to Gilmer as a couple in 1983 to canoe the Cartecay River. We fell in love with the area immediately and in 1989 bought property near Cherrylog to build a second home. We enjoyed the area as weekenders for years, but longed to live here full time. In May of 2002 we celebrated our move to full-time Gilmer living! Our daughter, Whitney graduated from Gilmer High School in 2005. What a blessing the past 12 years have been! There is literally no place on earth I would rather be. I would love to be able to help our great community reach its unrealized potential.

  1. Praying for you and Shirley as you walk this path together. May The Lord call forth his wisdom and discernment that he equipped you with, that His purposes will be met through your obedience and thanks.

    • Thank you, Larry for your prayer and words of encouragement. When Solomon was made king of Israel, his prayer went like this: (1Ki 3:7-9 NIV) “Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.
8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen,a a great people, too numerous to count or number.
9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.”
This is my prayer as I am considered for a leadership position in our great county.

  2. CONGRATULATIONS Travis!! Thank The Lord Gilmer finally got it right……I believe you and Charlie will do GREAT things for our community.
